چکیده
Context. Modern imaging polarimetry provides spatially resolved observations for many circumstellar disks and quantitative results the measured polarization which can be used comparisons with model calculations systematic studies of disk samples. Aims. This paper introduces quadrant parameters Q 000 , 090 180 270 Stokes U 045 135 225 315 describes their use polarimetric characterization dust in debris disks. Methods. We define xxx illustrate properties measurements around HR 4796A from Milli et al. Results. The are ideal a well-defined azimuthal dependence polarized light because they based on “natural” pattern produced by scattering. For normalized to integrated ∕ ϕ or ratios like depend only inclination i function f ( θ ) dust, do not radial distribution emissivity. Because usually well known observations, we derive shape angle range sampled quadrants. finding also applies vertical extensions as observed Diagnostic calculated all several parameter g Henyey-Greenstein ). apply these measurement 4796A, find that one does reproduce well. better solution three-parameter 1 2 w ), but it noted well-observed complex cannot described full detail parameters. Conclusions. very useful quantifying illuminated central star. They test deviations geometry axisymmetry constrain without fitting images. easy therefore suited

Why circumstellar disks are so faint in scattered light: the case of HD 100546
Context. Scattered light images of circumstellar disks play an important role in characterizing the planet forming environments around young stars. The characteristic size of the scattering dust grains can be estimated from the observed brightness asymmetry between the near and far side of the disk, for example using standard Mie theory. Such models, however, often overpredict the brightness of...

Ground based imaging, imaging polarimetry, and recentHubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images of protostars have revealed very complex scattered light patterns that cannot be entirely explained by 2-D radiation transfer models. We present here for the first time radiation transfer models of T Tau and IRAS 04016+2610 that are fully 3-D, with the aim of investigating the effects on image mo...

Observations of Circumstellar Disks
The imaging of disks around young stars presents extreme challenges in high dynamic range, angular resolution, and sensitivity. Recent instrumental advances have met these challenges admirably, leading to a marked increase in imaging discoveries. These have opened up a new era in studies of the origin of planetary systems. Questions about our own solar system’s formation, and of the prevalence ...
متن کاملDynamics of Circumstellar Disks
We present a series of 2-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of massive disks around protostars. We simulate the same physical problem using both a ‘Piecewise Parabolic Method’ (PPM) code and a ‘Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic’ (SPH) code, and analyze their differences. The disks studied here range in mass from 0.05M∗ to 1.0M∗ and in initial minimum Toomre Q value from 1.1 to 3.0. We adopt simp...
